Congratulations- You Have.. RATS!! ^_^

No, I don't mean the icky, diseased, scavenging, dumpster-diving, sewer-dwelling kind! :)
I mean the sweet, cute, clean, adorablely well-bred, adoptable little pet ones that are found in pet stores and from pet breeders. ^_^ These little cuties are one month old, and it's all [livejournal.com profile] plsurkity's fault. ;D
I kid, but with no joking, I am seriously her pupil atm, as I know theeeeess much about taking care of yittle ratlings, and I know she's got a lot of history of taking care of her little ones. ;D

She's been missing having rats for a long time now (she had some back in Wisconsin), and has recently decided to get a new one. Welll.. she shared w/me some news that a woman she'd been talking to had a bevvy of wee, one-month-old baby rats, and that she had to give them away asap or else they were going to a shelter in the next few days. With a high likelihood that these little guys would be euthanized there, there was a real need to find the little ones new homes. Now, for a bit of background on my mindset at the time; after talking w/Jess for a while on the subject, I admit I'd been toooying with the idea of maaaaybe getting one "someday," but I had my trepidations... After all, I'd gone down to visit my friend to do just that- not pick up a new pet or two. ;)) Plus I haven't had a rodent since I was like.. six.. so I was pretty unsure of how to properly take care of 'em, and I had little knowledge of the expenses and care that was involved. So yeah, you could say I was pretty doubtful as to my ability to effectively and caringly adopt any new pet, let alone a needy rat baby.

Then all of a sudden a friend of mine and I went to Jessi's place on a spontaneous trip this past Friday night. Excited about her prospective new pet, (and admittedly, still remotely toying with the idea(, I first ended up talking w/Jessi about the babies, and then.. seeing pics. (The beginningo f my ratty downfall.) So of course, I was ALL about snagging one, then. ;) Still, acting as a voice of reason, [livejournal.com profile] flameofsilver (who was.. -very- not-thrilled with the notion of my getting a squeaky fuzzy), was thereto stringently remind me of the many, real, very valid reasons why getting a rat would be a very.. not smart idea. For one; I have two cats I've been unable to be with for 3 whole months, and who I'll be overjoyed to re-aquire hopefully in the near future- but who'll likely see any rodentia in the house as Official Lunch Treats given to them Cause Mommy Was Away. Then you have the extreme possibility that my mom will likely --flip her shit-- when she finds out I have -more- pets.. let alone two members of the rodentia family. Then you've got the expense and the potential new landlords and.. well.. you get the idea. He may not have been happy about my getting ratties, but Will did have some valid points. I was aware of thme all the while, but still, it was good to have a grounding force to remind me of these things... .... ;)

So after some talking w/Will and some considering of my own, I realized it might not be the best thing for me atm to adopt a new wee one. ..Nonetheless I still wanted to see and play w/the babies, so we ended up going up to Leesburg w/Jess to see all the new fuzzies. (If you're lost, you can follow my mental state like this: First I said "meh, maybe." Then as the night went on, it was "oh I am DEFINITELY getting a new rat-baby!!" Then it became "nah, I'm not getting a rat right now. I have other more important things to spend my money on."

And at last, we got to PetCo. I bought some keen new stuff to apologieze to my two kitties with, and I was happy, yay verily. ;
And then I came out to see Jessi and her new acquisitions. I just wanted to see the babies!!
-That- was my mistake. I took one look at those squiggling, squirming balls of soft, grey fuzz and I just couldn't resist. I automatically attached myself to a near-black one who I immediately named "Dhadow" upon first sight. He was climbing the upper back right-hand corner of the cage and looking adventuresome, & when I suddenly had the idea to give him a name I beckoned him by it, calling "Shadow! Shaaadow!! Come 'ere, li'l baby..!" And what clenched it?
He came.

So now I have a sweet little baby ball of one-month-old fur, and for companionship, I chose the next darkest ratling, and took him 'ome, too. ^_^ He's a lot more skittish and is still scared -to death- of me, but I've already had Shadow on my shoulder and carried him around at Jessi's, and I just can't wait for more folks to meet him. ^_^ (Besides, it's only been two days, so hopefully he'll come around. :):)) Their names are still in flux atm, but soon they'll be cemented. For the moment all I know is I want one to be called Nicodemus after the rat wizard in The Secret of NIMH, and the other to have a positive, famous rat's name, or that of another wizard. I'm thinking Aristobulous or Nezumi, the actual Japanese word for "rat." :):)

Anyway, gotta git ta work!! Hope y'all are having a wonderful day!!
OOH, and here's a pic of my fave li'l one, the one I first called "Shadow." :):)
(More pics and videos likely soon to follow, as soon as I get my CPU back... ;))

*hugs*
