Someone on the DP forum list put a query out to people; about whether or not folks like narrators to/in their stories.  For me, the answer is the same reguardless of whether you're dealing with audio or AV material:  My take?  "Sometimes."  For the whys and wherefores, see below.   Plus, I'd also like to you know your opinions as well. :)  I could take them to him, (the asker) and relay some of your finer points. :)

"Hiya! Personally I'm of a mind that narrators should solely be a means for doing a few specific things: To add a specific flavour or character quality necessary to set the mood or tone of a story, give setup/background that cannot otherwise be easily expressed in-story, and to move the storyline along while lending palpability to a piece. Beyond that, they're really not necessary- unless you need to tie things together for the listener that might not otherwise be able to be expressed in-scene... (Like helping the audience put pieces of a puzzle together, or expediting a part or passage of time that'd take too long or be too confusing to illustrate via the direct story medium.) They can have their drawbacks (like poorly written narrations or instances where someone's depended on them too much to tell too much of the story), but I love narrators when artfully done. Especially when you're dealing w/unique universes and combined or new mythos, or when your story's in a first-person narrative like what they've got going w/Byron. Brings a lot of great character background and universe-history w/it. :) Hope that helps!"

(My apologies to your gramarians out there. I canna remember where the quotes go w/continuing paragraphs- but  I'd like to!  I hope you enjoyed the tidbit anyway. ;)) ♥

So how about all of you?  How do you like narration in your televised or radio stories?
